SEED-ON, a Korean company has developed a new variety of onions which is tolerant to the cold and can be grown in extremely cold winter.  Unlike other onions prevailing worldwide which seeds in spring time and is harvested in the autumn (hereinafter said “Spring onion”), this new variety of onion seeds in autumn and is harvested in May/June (hereinafter said “Autumn onion”).  The Spring onions grow in the soil ground for 6 months, but this new variety of Autumn onions grow for over 9 months through 3 seasons (autumn/winter/spring), which grant a much better taste, richer flavor, thicker and higher density pulp, and higher nutrition, as well as longer storage-ability compared to “Spring onions”.

This new variety of Autumn onions can be farmed in cold areas such as the Northern part of South Korea, Central Asia, Russia, Europe and North America, as it can bear extremely cold weather up to –37 ℃ in winter.

In the case of “Spring onions”, the wholesale price in the market is US$80~US$200 per ton in autumn harvesting season. The price, however, is increased by 2.5 ~ 3 times higher in March~April due to the fact that it goes bad in storage and thus having less supply to the market.   “Autumn onions” are harvested and supplied to the market in June, during the season when there is an onion shortage in the market everywhere in the world.

Advantages of “Autumn Onion”

The worlds 1st developed winter hardy “Autumn onions” can grow through the winter even in cold regions such as the Northern part of South Korea, Central Asia, Russia, Eastern Europe and North America, as it can bear extremely cold weather down to – 30℃. (Onions in general cannot survive cold weather below -9℃ to -12℃)

 “Autumn onions” grow over for over a period of 9 months under the ground, as it seeds in September and is harvested in May/June, so that it has a much better taste, richer flavor, thicker pulp, higher nutrition and can be stored longer. 

In the view of farming practice, “Autumn onions” grow through 3 seasons (autumn/winter/spring).  It grows to be about 30cm in height before winter comes and then stops growing through the winter, and when it starts growing again in spring time, it grows faster than any weed so that it does not require so much manpower to weed the farm field.

“Autumn onions” get harvested in May/June.  This is the time that “Spring onions” dry up in storage or rot, so that the market price for onions skyrockets – the highest price year round, and fresh “Autumn onions” supplied to the market shall be well accepted and can be sold at a good price.

Once “Autumn onions” are supplied to the market in May/ June, the next coming “Spring onions”, which comes to the market in September/October, cannot stay in the market any longer, as “Autumn onions” have a much better taste and flavor.
